February 2019 Modeling, Sculpting, and Casting

I've been away from the gamedev roll I was on mid 2018 but now I'm getting back into it.  During my time away I've been busy teaching a class which focused primarily on Maya Modeling and clay sculpting.  During the class I chose to work along-side my students on my own projects, kind of a teach-by-example thing.

One of the projects was to make a model of bender.  This was my version.  The biggest challenge was to translate the Matt Groening overbite to 3D while maintaining the illusion that the base of Bender's head is a perfect cylinder.  I also spent some time with the shape of his visor which reads as a very boxy shape but it kind of flares out so that his eyes can be oversized and read better from multiple angles as well as the way that it connects pretty far forward on this head.



We also did some sculpting in oil-based clay.  I made this polar bear which I ended up casting in cold-cast bronze:
