August 5, 2018 - Teaching Game Dev at The Animation Project
Sorry I haven't blogged about game dev in a while. I got hired to teach a VR Development workshop at a place called The Animation Project. The crazy thing is I haven't had much experience with teaching. My friend who is on the board of directors at TAP thought I would be a good teacher and really pushed me to take the gig, so I did. And I love it!
The Animation Project, a.k.a. TAP, is unlike any place I have ever worked. This is their mission according to their web site:
"The Animation Project nurtures the social, emotional and cognitive growth of at-risk youth, using digital art technology as a therapeutic medium and a workforce development tool."
It's a pretty special place, and it requires some very unconventional teaching methods. After the first class I realized I needed to spice things up to keep the students engaged, so after rigidbodies I showed them how to program a player controller and then the thirdpersoncontroller. In a way, the class became a very general 3D game development course but to also look at our creations in VR to get a different perspective.
One of my students made this game after 2 1/2 weeks of class:
He also has a crawling zombie somewhere in this game and is currently adding an amazon box with arms and legs, completely modeled, built, and rigged in Maya.

We're wrapping up this session in the next 4 days so I'll get back to dev'ing soon! I have so many new ideas to try out since I started teaching this class and seeing how fast games can be made... I mean, I always knew I could work that fast but maybe I just got complacent and lazy LOL!
